While receiving the Cecile B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award on Sunday at the 2017 Golden Globe Awards for her esteemed career in the film industry, actress Meryl Streep gave a blistering, passionate speech criticizing Donald Trump’s “instinct to humiliate.”

Never referencing the president-elect by name, Streep specifically referred to an incident at one of Trump’s campaign events from November of 2015, in which he mocked a disabled reporter at a rally.

The most poignant part of the speech came when she discussed the trickle down effects of public displays of humiliation.

“This instinct to humiliate, when it’s modeled by someone in the public platform, by someone powerful, it kinda filters down into everyone else’s life. Disrespect invites disrespect. Violence incites violence. When the powerful use their position to bully others we all lose.”
