It was exactly one year ago that Nelson Melegrito and Rance Collins came up with the wacky idea of creating a little Facebook group called “Bros4Hillary.” Thomas McAbee was right in behind them, and a couple days later I joined the group and immediately met up with the guys and told them I wanted in. I came on board, along with Daniel Fusselman and Matt Garrett and the rest, as they say, is history.
It wasn’t always easy. We grew fast. We had conflict with each other and without outside groups. We struggled to find our footing and didn’t always agree. People came and went. But at the end of the day…these guys have become a second family to me. And so have all our members. I really do feel like we went through so much together that there’s no one else who can really truly understand us. And through the years I will feel a small bit of indebtedness to them. We ALL created something that is truly special. Not just the leadership, all of us.
SO many people have contributed to making this group shine. It’s daunting to try and count. You’re all in my heart today. You know who you are.
I wrote a little bit about our experience in a piece that was published on The Huffington Post called “In Politics, 2016 Was Year Of The Bro.” I thought I was all cried out. And then, earlier this week, I got this picture from a stranger who was at the Washington D.C. Women’s March last week. When I saw it I immediately burst into tears. Every time I look at it it makes me choke up. I don’t know who this person is, and she had no idea we would ever see it. But she is the reason why Bros4Hillary exists. I am so proud of all of you and all of us for everything we did together, and everything we will continue to do together with the spirit and love that is carried on in this sign. This journey did not pan out the way we had hoped. It is probably the biggest disappointment of my life and I am sure many of you feel the same way. But from our sorrow let us create progress. Let us make change. And let’s not just do it for Hillary. Let’s do it for each other.
Happy One Year Anniversary, Bros4Hillary. Thank you. And here’s to many many more to come. XOXO
