The Race for 2018

Diane Feinstein The Race for 2018

The 2016 presidential election was nothing short of an American tragedy.

But the Resistance movement that was born from that tragedy showed its teeth last week in this years elections for several state Delegate’s races, two gubernatorial races, and tons of other state-wide elections and mayoral races in which Democrats won with such a large margin that many have called it the beginning of the “Blue Tsunami” on social media.

The feelings of elation are worth it: for the past year, resistance activists and leaders have been chewing their fingernails in anticipation of this result. On top of Phil Murphy’s gubernatorial victory in New Jersey (which effectively ousted Republican governor and former failed presidential candidate Chris Christie, was a Ralph Northam’s newly-won governorship in Virginia.

Virginia broke history in more ways than one: Democrat Danica Roem bested Republican Bob Marshall for a seat in Virginia House of Delegates (the state’s parliament), making her the first transgender person to serve in the Virginia a particularly profound accomplishment given that Marshall had won re-election in his district 14 times and served in the legislature of TWENTY-EIGHT years. Even more sweet: Marshall happened to be the gentleman who wrote the anti-trans bill which made controversial headlines this year.  At least 8 transgender people were elected to government office last week total. Wow.

There’s no doubt that progressives and liberals made history (and progress) last week.

But while the celebration is well worth it, it would be unwise and indeed foolish to believe that Democrats can rest on their laurels. The real test of this movement isn’t in 2020’s presidential race. That kind of thinking is what gave us Trump to begin with. The real test will be in the 2018 mid-term elections in which Democrats are aiming to take back the House of Representatives — and, maybe– the Senate.

Democrat Doug Jones is vying to fill the vacant U.S. Senate seat left by embattled Attorney General Jeff Sessions. He faces off against Roy Moore, the Republican against who recent allegations of an improper relationship with a minor child were lodged. Via

And that can be influenced even sooner than next November– Alabama is holding a special election on December 12, 2017 to fill the United States Senate seat left vacant by embattled Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who famously recused himself from the DOJ’s probes into Donald Trump’s campaign connections to Russia during the 2016 election. The candidates? Doug Jones, a former U.S. Attorney for Alabama faces off against Republican Roy Moore, a former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Alabama won the Republican primary after defeating incumbent U.S. senator Luther Strange in the primary runoff.

Moore is of course the subject of enormous scrutiny and under great pressure right now, from Democrats and Republican leaders, to step down from his campaign given the allegations that surfaced last week claiming that he engaged in inappropriate relations with minor-aged children.

Moore has to go. It’s our duty to make sure it happens.

In the upcoming mid-term elections, Democrats will need to hold off GOP challengers and WIN 3 seats currently held by Republicans in order to take back the United State Senate. This is going to be a sizable challenge but not an impossible one, as only 9 Republican seats are up for re-election in 2018.

Conversely, if Republicans are able to make a net gain of 8 seats, they will achieve a filibuster-proof majority render Democrats powerless and ensure at least four years of Donald Trump’s unchecked reign. There are 25 Democratic and Independent seats up for election. We simply cannot allow that to happen.

Democrats best hope at impeachment, or mitigating more damage by the Trump regime, will need to hold off challengers and net three GOP seats.

The seats to watch: Alabama, Arizona, Mississippi, Nevada, Nebraska, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming.

This is tough terrain for Democrats. The Democratic National Committee just elected it’s new leadership on Saturday, and it’s time to get serious about 2018 midterm races.

Check out our Elections section for more up to the minute updates on the various campaigns to watch.

Jeff Flake Compares Trump to Stalin and Assad

In a speech before the United States Senate this morning, Senator Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) a Republican from within Donald Trump’s own party, compared the president to Syrian dictator General Bashir al-Assad and Josef Stalin, the infamous Soviet dictator who ruled over communist Russia until he died in the 1950s.

Flake’s speech was inspired by concerns that Trump’s attack on the news media and on free speech has a chilling affect that authoritarians use to assume power, and referred to Trump’s statements about the press as “shameful and repulsive.”

Flake announced late last year that he would not seek reelection in his home state of Arizona, so that he might vote and speak out against the president without fear of political repercussions. His speech is a break from the ranks, as members of the Republican party have been by and large unwilling to vocalize any criticism of Mr. Trump, who’s first year in the White House was mired by scandal.

The controversial comments by Senator Flake mark the second straight day of headline-making rebukes of the president by high-profile senators, with Cory Book (D-N.J.) having made news yesterday for an impassioned rebuke of GOP complicity in Donald Trump’s racist rhetoric.

Tearful Cory Booker Drops Scorching Rebuke of Trump, Complicit GOP

With voice trembling and fists clenched, a tearful Senator Cory Booker (D-N.J.) unleashed a powerful and impassioned rebuke of Donald Trump and Republican lawmakers who have turned a blind-eye to racist remarks the president made last week. His message was simple: if you stay silent, you are complicit.

“Your silence and amnesia is complicity,” Booker seethed. The comments were directed to a stunned Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen at the conclusion of a volatile oversight hearing of the Senate Judiciary Committee, for which Booker and Senator Kamala Harris made their debut as only the second and third-ever black members. Nielsen was visibly moved by the comments, and notably silent at the conclusion, unable to rebut the impassioned speech.

Secretary Nielsen drew the Senator’s ire after repeatedly refusing to answer questions as to the specific language Donald Trump used in a closed-door meeting last week when referring to Haitian and African immigrants.

“I don’t know if 73% of your time is spent on white supremacist hate groups,” Booker continued, describing his tears of rage after receiving a phone call from Senator Dick Durbin detailing the president’s comments.  “I receive enough death threats to know the threat in in this country. Kamala receives enough death threats to know the threat in this country.”

The country was rocked by bombshell reporting last week that the president referred to Haiti and Africa as “shithole countries” during the meeting, which brought Democratic and Republican lawmakers together to negotiate a DREAMER bill, immigration reform, and Mr. Trump’s wall along the Mexico border.

The Congress was back in session Tuesday following the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, celebrating the civil rights icon, a fact not lost on Senator Booker, who referred to to him as one of  the “greatest heroes in this country who spoke out about people who have convenient amnesia or who are bystanders.”

The President Is A Shithole From Which Only Oprah Can Save Us

The President Is A Shithole

This is a message from the emergency broadcast system: Donald Trump, the man who calls himself President is a Shithole…from which only Oprah Winfrey can save us on this week’s all-new episode of the Bros4America podcast. Join in on the fun at Subscribe to the Bros4America Podcast to hear the Bros pick their “Shithole of the Week Award.”

On this episode, moderator Alex Mohajer and co-hosts Daniel Fusselman and Thomas McAbee discuss  Donald Trump’s horrendous racially charged comment last week in which he is alleged to have asked why immigrants to America must come from Africa and Haiti, which he referred to as “shitholes.”

The media frenzy was almost as batshit crazy as the online speculation this week about whether or not Oprah Winfrey would run for president, or when alt-right conservative columnist Ben Shapiro made Alex the target of yet another alt-right hit job this week for a tweet that was based on a rather good Huffington Post editorial (please note: we are biased).

The Bros 4 America Podcast is executive produced by Alex Mohajer, for which he serves as co-host along with Thomas McAbee, Daniel Fusselman, with an occasional Barbara Walters-esque appearance by Rance Collins (if and when we should be so lucky). The theme music is “It’s Always Too Late to Start” by Chris Zabriskie, and is created using Audacity and powered by BluBerry. As always special thanks to Nelson Melegrito, Founder of Bros4Hillary, and Hillary Clinton, whose blessing gave us the fortitude to move forward.

Fire and Fury and F-Bombs!

‘Fire and Fury,’ journalist Michael Wolff’s expose on the inner-workings of Donald Trump’s White House, surely inspired some F-bombs from Trump and his legal counsel this week. But on this week’s episode of the Bro4America podcast, the first of the new year and the first time since its inception, the Bros4America podcast must preface an episode with a disclaimer and its very first ‘E’ designation for explicit language.

Tell us what you think! We would like to learn more about what you enjoyed about and what you would like to see added to the Bros4America podcast. Will you take thirty seconds to give us your opinion? The Bros 4 America Podcast

While discussing the week’s hot topics and current events, panelists Alex Mohajer, Daniel Fusselman, and Rance Collins (in his premiere episode) dropped appropriate f-bombs for three more-than-deserving recipients. Listen to hear why Congressional Republicans, conservative journalist/hate-monger/never-had-a-friend-in-high-school Ben Shapiro, and Donald Trump himself all received the salty four-letter salute this week.

On top of the colorful language, the Bros discuss the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), the new tell-all book ‘Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House,’ Donald Trump’s mental state, the Iranian protests, and the 25th Amendment and whether or not it is a feasible way to remove the president.

The episode serves as the debut for Rance Collins, and his reunion with Alex Mohajer. Some may remember them from the BrosCast Live during the 2016 presidential election.

Demand Senate GOP Not Interfere With Trump Russia Investigation

Commission on Russian Interference

Republican efforts to derail congressional investigations in what has become known as the “Trump Russia” investigation the relationship between Donald Trump, his campaign, and the Kremlin have reached a fever pitch. Unless the American people can know with full faith and confidence that the President of the United States is not compromised or inappropriately or illegally connected to Russian oligarchs or Russian President Vladimir Putin himself, we will no longer have a democracy.

We are asking Bros4America members, followers, and subscribers to call the Senate GOP at [844-514-7166] and demand that the investigation continue uninterrupted and insist that efforts to derail Special Counsel Robert Mueller are unacceptable.

Remember that Mueller is a Republican and has earned virtually unanimous bipartisan praise for an upstanding career.

Bros4America Announces 2017 Bros of the Year

Bro of the Year 2017

The name “Bros4America” has always been a play on words meant to be a tongue-in-cheek response to the Bernie Bro phenomenon, the MAGA trolls, and the misogynistic and white nationalist overtures we saw taking hold during the 2016 campaign season. Indeed, we started as “Bros4Hillary” and today, we have a majority-female membership (the resistance is female and we’ve always known it) and a strong legacy of LGBTQ membership. But, we would be remiss if we did not, in the final episode of the Bros4America podcast in 2017, pick our Bro of the Year 2017.

Panelists Alex Mohajer, Thomas McAbee and Daniel Fusselman ruminated on the ups and  downs of 2017 in this all new episode which drops on New Years Eve. Here are their picks:

Daniel Fusselman

Paul Manafort Gets It

Photo: Bill Clark/Getty Images

It was the moment the world realized that it wasn’t just in our heads– the Trump campaign did in fact conspire with a foreign hostile power to influence the 2016 American presidential election… and when Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s indictment came in for Paul Manafort, Donald Trump’s former campaign manager and the chairman of his campaign, it spelled the beginning of the of the beginning of the end?

The Bros discuss impeachment possibilities on the final episode in 2017 for the  Bros4America podcast.

The Women’s March

Bros4Hillary got a shout out in the signage spotted at the Women’s March on Washington D.C.

It was the impetus for the Resistance movement and not only a preview of things to come but a firm finger on the pulse of the national feeling toward the incoming Trump Administration. As the year unfolded, the resistance proved it was female and so there was no more fitting an occasion to commemorate the moment of the year.

Bros4America co-founder Alex Mohajer has written about the Women’s March extensively for the Huffington Post, both criticisizing and praising it, and comparing it to other women’s movements around the globe.

Surprise! The Bros have been invited to march with Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA) at the Women’s March in Los Angeles this January. Last year there were an estimated 750,000 attendees. Here’s hoping to an even bigger turnout in 2018.

Donald Trump’s Inauguration

Shoulda been her.

Whether you loved it or hated it (spoiler alert: we hated it). Listen to the all new episode of the Bros4America podcast to hear the Bros savage the inauguration speech and compare it to the notorious movie villain Bane from the 2012 Christopher Nolan film “The Dark Knight Rises.”

At least two of the bros admit to never having watched the Inauguration speech– they simply couldn’t stomach it– but that the white nationalist overtures and deeply divisive tone were clearly a sign of things to come from the Trump Administration. Indeed, the  administration accomplished only one real legislative achievement, if you can call it that, in Trump’s tax bill, which was passed right before the holidays in such a hasty fashion that the damage it will do was swept under the rug by Congressional Republicans.

Either way, love it or hate it, the Inauguration set the tone for 2017.

Emily Nash

True to the times. Emily Nash, an amazing young woman and a junior at Lunenburg High School in Lunenburg, Mass., came in first place during her school’s golf tournament in October.

However, according to the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association, girls can play in the boys’ golf tournament as part of a team, but they aren’t allowed to be entered as individuals.

As a result, Nash was actually denied a trophy and a spot in the boys state championship in favor of the lesser-scoring male competitor.

It certainly recalls our most recent presidential election, where the overwhelming popular vote winner was denied the White House despite being infinitely more qualified and indeed sane.

African American Women

The resistance is female. And in the case of the Democratic Party, which will need to be the coalition that takes down Donald Trump and serve as the last stand against the threat of autocracy, the resistance is black women.

It’s true that the majority of the calls to Congress this year were made by women. That women had a great round of elections, and that women sparked the #MeToo movement that continues to take down power players in the media.

And in Alabama, we saw that Black women voted for Doug Jones by a 98% to 2% margin proving unequivocally that black women are the heart and the base of the Democratic party.

Hear that, Bernie?

Bros4America Members Making A Difference

Bros4Hillary was a force to be reckon with. Watching our members move forward from the brutal loss in the 2016 presidential election and move towards productive activism made the entire process and experience worth it for us. Folks like Austin Taylor, who went on to work on some of the crucial campaigns of the election season in 2017, and Debra Cohn, who became the head of her local Democratic club and worked through her disappointment towards becoming a resistance activist.

You are the heart and soul of the resistance.

Debra Cohn of Pasadena, CA

You Got Stein-ed!

You Got Stein-ed! Former Green party candidate for President Dr. Jill Stein is now a subject of interest in Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into the Trump campaign's ties to Russia.

The Bros4America podcast is back with an all new episode, and have a few special words about and for former Green Party candidate for President of the United States, Dr. Jill Stein, who the bros are all too familiar with following our coverage of her post-election efforts to procure a recount in the states of Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania.

Whatever happened to those recounts, Jill? The Trump campaign’s legal team killed them before they could be complete? Riiiiight. Sure, sure.

This week, news broke that Dr. Stein has become a prime focus of the investigation into Russian interference with the 2016 presidential election, and for good reason. Photos of Dr. Stein at an event for the television network RT (Russia Today) surfaced earlier this year sitting feet away from Russian President Vladimir Putin and disgraced former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, who was indicted earlier this month for lying to the FBI. The photo was snapped in 2015, before Stein even accepted her party’s nomination.

You got Stein'ed!

OF COURSE, close followers of the 2016 aftermath, data dweebs, and history buffs will recall that Dr. Stein received the exact number of votes as Donald Trump’s margin of victory in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania, the three determinative swing states that procured Donald Trump an electoral college victory with only 78,000 votes.

Flynn is said to have cut a plea deal with Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who has been the focus of a hardcore effort by Republicans and the White House to delegitimize and derail him and his investigation as it become more and more certain that his investigation may reach the highest echelons of the White House and following news that he has obtained the financial records of Mr. Trump, his son-in-law Jared Kushner, and others from Deutsche Bank.

Also in this episode, the Bros go all in on Republican Party for the GOP Tax Scam!

Time to Investigate Senator Rand Paul For Ties to Russia

Investigate Senator Rand Paul
Credit: New York Times/ Reuters

John McCain first said it back in March.  The Senator from Kentucky has actively worked to further the objectives of Russian President Vladimir Putin. And it’s time for congress to investigate Senator Rand Paul for his connection to Putin and Russian oligarchs.

News broke Thursday morning that Attorney General Jeff Sessions, at the behest of Donald Trump, will open an FBI inquiry into whether or not Hillary Clinton violated any laws related to the now widely-debunked and completely false Uranium One fake news scandal. Those in need of an explainer on this faux-controversy can enjoy political commentator and TV personality Joy Ann Reid brilliantly taking down the whole thing in one minute flat. No need for a Congressional probe, y’all. We got it covered.

The news comes as part of a broader, coordinated social media push by certain GOP members of Congress and the White House to delegitimize and distract from Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference with the 2016 presidential election and the extent to which the Trump campaign conspired with a foreign hostile power to influence an American election.

The whole thing is so transparent it might be laughable if it weren’t so alarming given Senator Rand’s recent record. Since Donald Trump’s inauguration, the senior Senator from Kentucky has acted in ways that suggest he is in cahoots with the same Russian oligarchy that seem to have a stranglehold on the executive branch.

It’s All About the Sanctions, Baby

In June, the United States Senate voted nearly unanimously and with bipartisan support for additional sanctions to be placed on Russia as punishment for interfering with the 2016 presidential election, annexing the Crimea region of Ukraine, and its support of the Syrian government during its ongoing civil war.  Yes, despite the line you might hear them take on Fox News or in the media, even most Republican senators quietly acknowledged the need to respond to what was an obvious attack on American democracy and supported the sanctions. Only one Republican voted against the bill.

Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky.

The other?

An independent from Vermont whose diehard supporters still contend that the Democratic National Committee was “rigged” and that the election was stolen from him.  (Spoiler Alert: Bernie Sanders.)

In Mueller We Trust

In recent days, whispers have grown to a fever pitch both in Washington and on social media that Donald Trump intends to fire Mueller before Christmas. Congressional Republicans and the White House have begun what appears to be a campaign to ouster Mueller by impugning his integrity and questioning his ability to fairly adjudicate the investigation. If true, the firing would constitute such a grave obstruction of justice and obscene gesture to the American electorate and the rule of law itself that organizations like March for Truth have organized a massive nationwide Rapid Response Effort, promising to take to the streets across the United States.

Chiming in to the chorus of Republican voices now adopting this strategy was none other than Senator Rand Paul, the senior Senator from Kentucky.  Mr. Paul made headlines on Thursday morning when he publicly called for a federal investigation into the conduct of Obama-era administration officials and efforts to allegedly prevent Donald Trump from taking office following the 2016 presidential election. The bombshell tweet seems to have no factual or evidentiary basis.

A Move Right Out of the Old Russian Playbook

Misinformation as a strategy is not new for the GOP, who has made their political backbone on a foundation of lies over the past twenty years, maybe longer. But this coordinated assault on truth is something new. And distinctly sinister. And borrows from very well-established propaganda tactics used by Russia for a very long time.

The Russian Government is currently involved in an all-out information war on the United States of America and other Western democracies. It is well-organized and well-funded.

It has been used to great success in its efforts to annex the Crimea region of the Ukraine and has been called the weaponization of information. From

[Russia] uses a network of officials, journalists, sympathetic commentators and internet trolls to create an alternative reality in which all truth is relative, and no information can be trusted.

…Its propaganda largely relies on four tactics: dismiss the critic, distort the facts, distract from the main issue and dismay the audience. Finally, it relies heavily on the Kremlin-controlled media, and paid or sympathetic commentators in the West, to pass its messages.

The Russians use a tactic known as the 4D approach to spreading misinformation: Dismiss, Distort, Distract, Dismay. Donald Trump’s entire administration has built upon this model, constantly skewering former President Barack Obama and the people’s President, Hillary Clinton for the very things he himself is guilty of.  Senator Paul’s tweets of late fall squarely within this model.

The solution? The folks responsible for are come from the Mohyla School of Journalism (LWC), a Ukraine-based academic institution dedicated to ending the proliferation of fake news. Their advice for the west?

The West should respond by emphasizing its own narrative of the freedom of choice and democracy, values which are threatened by the Russian regime and seen by it as a threat. This is an area where the states of CEE can play a leading role. Further, the West should publicly identify the key Russian tactics each time they are used, and expose the Kremlin’s network of paid commentators and pseudo-journalists for what they are.

Don’t mind if we do:

Rand Paul Is Working For Russian President Vladimir Putin

Don’t take out word for it. Here’s Republican senator John McCain on the floor of the United States Senate saying the exact same thing in March after Senator Paul inexplicably blocked a vote which would allow Montenegro admissions to the United Nations, a move seen as exclusively pro-Kremlin interests and completely void of any logical basis otherwise.

The Blue Tsunami Has Begun

FCC Expected to Repeal Obama-Era Net Neutrality Protections

In a matter of hours, the Republican-lead Federal Communications Commission (the FCC) is scheduled to vote on the repeal of Obama-era net neutrality protections, which passed in 2015 with the intention of keeping an open and free internet. The repeal would give less regulatory control over the internet and allow for corporate entities to charge higher prices for internet depending on what sites you’re accessing. Talk about pay for play.

Under the FCC new rules, the FCC would eliminate “rules barring internet providers from blocking or slowing down access to online content.” The FCC would also kill a rule “barring providers from prioritizing their own content.”
